- 1630 (394 years ago) (5 May) Ottoman Grand Vizier, Gazi Hüsrev Pasha, defeated a large Safavid army under Zainal Khan Begdeli Shamlu near Hamadan, in western Persia. The city of Hamadan then fell to Khuzrev’s siege, although he was later driven back from an advance against Baghdad.

- 1855 (169 years ago) (5 May) Bidar Kadın, the fourth consort of Sultan Abdul Hamid II, was born in 1855 in Kobuleti (now in modern-day Georgia). She was the daughter of Prince Ibrahim Talustan Bey.
