This Day in History: 1683-04-01

(1 April) The Ottoman Sultan Mehmed IV and his army left Edine, the former Ottoman capital, for the planned Siege of Vienna. The siege began on 14 July 1683, but the Ottomans failed to take the city after their defeat at Vienna on 12 September. It marked the beginning of the end of Turkish domination in Eastern Europe.
