(9 March) The Armenian ruler of Edessa, Thoros, was assassinated. As a result of this assassination, Baldwin I of Jerusalem became the Count of Edessa and laid the foundation of the County of Edessa on 10 March 1098. In 1144, Imad al-Din Zengi would besiege and capture the city, putting an end to the county.
