(17 June) The Empress consort of the Mughal Empire, Mumtaz Mahal, died during childbirth. Her husband, Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, then spent more than 20 years building her tomb, the Taj Mahal. She was born Arjumand Banu Begum in Agra and was also the mother of the next emperor Aurangzeb.
