(30 March) The 7th Ottoman Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror was born in Edirne. He first succeeded his father Sultan Murad Il at the age of 12 when the latter abdicated the throne in 1444. Following the tension and turmoil in the state, the young Sultan left the throne to his father but would again ascend in 1451 at the age of 19.
