(30 November) During the Battle of Sinop (Crimean War), in the early morning, six Russian ships under the command of Pavel Nakhimov launched an attack on the Ottoman fleet using exploding shell projectiles. With this massive attack, the Ottoman Black Sea fleet had been sunk. The town of Sinop was torched, and Admiral Osman Pasha was taken captive.
