17 June 656	Deaths	(17 June) The third Rashidun caliph Uthman bin Affan was assassinated after a siege upon his house. Uthman was killed by two Egyptian rebels. He ruled for 12 years from 644 to 656 CE.
17 June 1631	Deaths	(17 June) The Empress consort of the Mughal Empire, Mumtaz Mahal, died during childbirth. Her husband, Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, then spent more than 20 years building her tomb, the Taj Mahal. She was born Arjumand Banu Begum in Agra and was also the mother of the next emperor Aurangzeb.
